Hello!

Thank you for visiting! I’m Katy, and I live in Washington, D.C. I moved here from Texas after graduating college in June 2022.

When I first moved, I considered bringing my car. Back in Texas, public transportation wasn’t a viable option for my daily needs, so I was used to driving everywhere. I had heard things like “You don’t really need a car in D.C.” and “Driving here is the worst decision you could make.” Those were good arguments, but what ultimately deterred me was the $300 monthly parking fee at my apartment (which also had a waitlist!).

I’ve always appreciated the D.C. Metro system, but really came to enjoy it after joining a local transit enthusiasts group (yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like). Listening to others discuss the intricacies of WMATA got me curious about what I’d been overlooking on my daily rides.

I’ve since enjoyed doing deep research into what makes public transit more engaging. That may sound ambiguous, but I’m particularly interested in initiatives that enhance the rider experience, such as limited-edition farecards or trains and buses wrapped to reflect community happenings. I’ve also started venturing out on transit adventures (including Amtrak, which, as I’ve learned, isn’t technically public transit), exploring places I might never have otherwise visited.

My hope for this site is to share some of the research I’m doing and transit adventures I’m taking. Maybe it’ll encourage you to think a bit more about the transportation you use (or at least leave you with a fun fact to share at your next gathering.)
